Popular Career Options after B. Com



Commerce has always been known as a professional field of study with several exciting and rewarding career opportunities on offer. However, the availability of excellent employment opportunities just after B.Com has also created a general sense that Commerce has very limited scope of study as far as higher education opportunities are concerned.

But this is a myth, especially in today’s time when even so many generic study options like journalism and management are available. Apart from these general options, Commerce students also have the chance to opt for further studies in their own field in order to enhance their academic knowledge and employability options. Below, we shall discuss the main academic domains available to B.Com students for further studies after completing their graduation.

Accountancy & Finance

Accountancy and Finance form the core of Commerce as a field of study. Although B.Com provides the basic knowledge and understanding of these subjects, students who are keen to study them in detail can opt for any of the following programmes after completing their B.Com.

Chartered Accountancy (CA): Chartered Accountancy is considered to the highest degree in the field of finance and accountancy. The CA programme trains students with total and thorough knowledge of accounting, auditing and taxation.

Certified Financial Analyst (CFA): The CFA academic programme is for students who possess keen interest financial systems and investments. The CFA course equips the students with basic accounting standards, various business practices, economic policies and conditions etc.

Cost Accountancy (ICWA): Cost Accountancy is an academic programme that is for students who are interested in managing the cost of the company and developing checks and balance mechanism to keep the company in profit.

Company Secretary (CS): Students who are interested in the management of company stock and investments should consider the academic programme of CS. MBA- Finance: One of the most lucrative academic career choices available to B.Com students today. Management programme with specialization in Finance has emerged to be an effective propeller for students who are seeking a position at the higher echelons of organizational setup in the domain of Finance.

Banking & Insurance

Another traditional field that has always been available to B.Com students after completion of their graduation has been Banking and Insurance. There are specialized academic programmes available at postgraduate level, which can train students in basics of these sectors. M.Com with specialization in Banking & Insurance, MBA with specialization in Banking and MBA with specialization in Insurance are a few among them. The majority of postgraduate level programmes in Banking & Insurance sector also offer a host of sub-specialization fields to choose from, to help students find the field they are most passionate about.

Marketing

Marketing is often considered to be a field for generalists, where students from any background can perform well. While this remains true, but B.Com students stand at a definite advantage when it comes to MBA in Marketing or PGDM programme in marketing. This is because; marketing management primarily relies upon numerical and analytical data, which is to be processed to develop actionable insights for a marketing campaign. Considering that B.Com graduates are already equalled with basic analytical aptitude and logical methodology to derive insights from data; MBA marketing seems like a natural choice for B.Com graduates.

Law

While not many consider a career in legal domain an ideal choice for B.Com students, but law can be an excellent field to study and build your professional career. Students can choose to specialize in any field of law they feel comfortable in. They can choose to specialize in business law, in which their B.Com graduation background will come-in very handy or they can also opt to specialize in academic law or general law, depending upon their personal interest in the field.

Computer Programming

Information Technology is the fastest growing sector of not only the Indian economy but also the global one. B.Com students who want to cash-in in on the excellent academic and professional opportunities available in this field can do so by joining MCA or MSc IT academic programmes. Although the majority of colleges offering these programmes require graduation in science background, some colleges do allow B.Com graduates with excellent performance in Mathematics to take up these courses. While, this may take you away from your core commerce domain, but if it is something that you are interested in or are passionate about, you should seriously consider it.

While these are just a few of the popular career choices available to B.Com students after completion of their graduation, there are many other niche options available as well. Students should consider their interest, passion and long-term commitment in terms of building a career, before choosing the domain they would like to study further.
