Lift

Lift Technology alias Elevator Technology is a budding career field which provide ample job prospects in India and abroad. Lift is inevitable for any multistoried building. The mushrooming of multifaceted building like malls, multiplex, showrooms etc. in the cities have created a sudden burst of opportunities in the field of lift technology.

Lift technicians/mechanics are well trained professionals who can handle all the issues connected with the lift, elevators and related equipment. They are responsible for repairing and servicing of lifts, escalators, elevators, chairlifts and other electronic transport equipment in commercial, residential and industrial buildings. The major tasks of lift technicians include installation, testing, maintenance (breakdown & preventive) and renovation of lifts and related equipments; ensuring its safety operation; restoring the damaged parts/break down maintenance, servicing at regular intervals etc. 

The work of a lift technician requires a comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, physics, electronics and hydraulics as most of the equipment uses computerized or electronic controls. Many elevators are controlled with microprocessors, which are programmed to analyze traffic conditions in order to dispatch elevators in the most efficient manner.

Quite a few placement opportunities are being generated everyday in the field of Lift Technology. In India, several Industrial Training institutes (ITI's) run by government and Industrial training centers (ITC's) run privately both operating under the general guidance of the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET), Ministry of Labour & Employment, Union government of India conduct courses in Lift technology. NILT (National Institute of Lift Technology) is one of the major institutes in the private sector offering lift technology course. Placement facilities are also provided by the institutes conducting lift technology courses. Those who have successfully completed the course can get job openings as Lift Engineers, Lift Supervisors, Lift Technicians etc. 

Eligibility & Course Areas

To pursue a career as a Lift Technician/ Mechanic, one should have a Diploma in Lift Technology. I.T.I's and some private institutes offer courses for Lift Mechanics. The minimum eligibility for applying to this course is a pass in the 10th standard. No admission test are conducted for the course. Direct admission will be given to the candidate, if they provide required certificates. Diploma in Lift Technology course is of 1 year duration and the Lift Mechanic craftsmen training course is of 2 years. The passed out I.T.I trainees of Electrician and Wireman trade can join directly to the 2nd year of Lift mechanic course. Some institutes provides 6 months lift technology courses also.

Courses in Lift technology involves with the study of subjects related to installation, servicing and commissioning of lifts; its classifications, structural designs etc. The course programs consist of both theory and practical training.

Personal Skills : An excellent lift technician must possess a great mechanical aptitude and a thorough knowledge of electrical components. They should have the technical knowledge to solve various issues related with lifts, elevators etc. Other essential attributes needed for this profession are loads of patience, ability to find the faults and defects in machines, problem solving skills and good judgement. They must also have computer skills to monitor the lift systems. It is a job which include a variety of physical tasks like carrying and lifting heavy equipments while repairing the lifts. So one must be healthy and must have good physical stamina. Good communication skill is very much needed for a lift technician, since they usually work as part of a team. Sometimes lift technicians may have to work long hours in hazardous situations and they should possess the ability to manage the various risks associated with the job. They should be familiar with hand tools like screw drivers, cutting torches, welding equipment etc. 

Job Prospects & Career Options

It is the lift/ elevator technicians or mechanics who install and maintain lifts, elevators or other similar equipment in a variety of settings. The job profile of a lift technician involves assembling and installing of lifts and escalators, modifying circuitry in them; monitoring its performance with a computer, maintaining and rectifying faults in them. To ensure the safe operating condition of lifts, they also perform regular services like testing equipment with meters and gauges, oiling and greasing moving parts, adjusting equipment for effective function, replacing worn parts etc.

Job prospects in the field of Lift technology are expected to be excellent, especially for those with advanced training and experience. After successful completion of a lift technology course, the candidates can find job openings in lift/ elevator firms through the institutes placement service in India and abroad. 

Lift mechanics may find employment in commercial office buildings, on university campuses or with elevator service companies. They can work on escalators in airports and department stores and in lift shafts located in buildings, hotels, construction sites, factories etc. Some of the prestigious employers in this field include Johnson Lifts, Otis, Schindler Elevators, Hinus Elevators, Skyline Elevators, Easso Lifts, Royal Elevators, Orbit Elevators, Hitec Elevators, Beco Lifts, Kone Lifts, Fukama Elevators etc. Even though the employers hire trained candidates, they have to undergo an in-house training in the establishment, where they are appointed. They will be paired up with experienced workers, so they may watch and learn the trade before performing work themselves.

In order to keep up to date with the latest electrical cabling, fittings, computer programs and other new products in this field, lift technicians has to attend workshops, seminars or training courses in the related field.
